Lineage as an Onboarding Map, Not Wallpaper

Two planners comparing hand-drawn graphs at a cafe table

Most lineage tools ship beautiful graphs that intimidate newcomers. We coach teams to carve guided paths: three stops per domain, each with a spoken script and a known owner.

In Dagster-heavy programs we map assets to product verbs—ingest, certify, publish—so product managers can rehearse explanations without touching YAML.

This post shares a rubric for judging whether a lineage screenshot is ready for HR-led orientation decks.

We also include a lightweight checklist for rotating the tour owners so knowledge does not ossify around a single staff engineer.
